Every Child Succeeds Develops, Validates and Quantifies a Treatment for Maternal Depression

Cincinnati, Ohio

Wednesday, August 12, 15

Maternal Depression is a major barrier to the well being of mothers and infants, while also being costly to society. Cincinnati’s Every Child Succeeds (ECS) Scientific Director Robert Ammerman, Ph.D. has developed and deployed the Moving Beyond Depression ™(MBD) maternal depression treatment program, to positively impact mothers and children, and is poised to reverse the downward spiral that results from clinical maternal depression.

Dr. Ammerman said,

“We have always known that the onset of depression negatively impacts the futures of mothers and infants. We are heartened that we have discovered a method via In-Home Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (IH-CBT) that positively modifies this challenge. Our rewarding outcomes are of interest across the country.”

Every Child Succeeds (a 16-year-old home visitation program) studied the incidence and effects of maternal depression for both individuals and society, and is deploying MBD in the following states: California, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Access in Ohio is limited to the counties served by ECS, although broader coverage is being sought.

Consider:

•Up to 45% of moms in home visiting programs experience clinical levels of depression (source: movingbeyonddepression.org)

•If moms can’t take care of themselves, they can’t take care of their children – a two-generational impact.

•ECS has conducted research to quantify the economic burden of depression in at risk mothers eligible for home visiting programs

•Research indicates that $12.3 million is spent by public and private insurers annually in the Greater Cincinnati area to treat depression being experienced among high-risk mothers.

•Another $6.5 million annually is lost to the economy through dollars not spent for out-of-pocket expenses, and through lost wages in the Greater Cincinnati area.

•This total negative impact for our community is nearly $19 million annually.

•Moving Beyond Depression was created to treat depression in these at risk moms, helping improve the lifetime trajectory for these mothers and their infant children, and to help ameliorate the economic burden to our region

This treatment (IH-CBT) results in more effective home visits, reduced depression, and allows the mother and child to realize the benefits from parenting education, social support and improved parent-child bonding. This leads to a healthier future for the family – mother, child, father, and community.

This breakthrough work is under national consideration for publication and is yet another victory for moms and babies. Both ECS and Moving Beyond Depression™ were born in Cincinnati.

“The overall goal of ECS is to improve the future of the mother and the infant. Our work in home visitation has given us access to the real challenges confronted by our high-risk families. The validated breakthrough work led by Dr. Ammerman, introduces an avenue that allows dramatic improvement for the lives of women and their children everywhere,” Judith B. Van Ginkel, PhD and President and Founder of ECS said.
