Following last year’s extremely sad and highly publicized case of Janay and Ray Rice, American sport leagues have felt the pressure to respond sensitively and efficiently to domestic abuse and sexism. The NBA teamed up with the WNBA as participants in the Lean In Together campaign that encourages men to stand with women for equality. A short commercial for the campaign, starring LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chicago Sky’s Elena Delle Donne, was released today.

Lean In Together is not sports-oriented, but a unique approach to raising awareness about equality (a particularly hot topic already this year). Lean In Together is a branch of Sheryl Sandberg‘s Lean In movement, which is also the name of her book that catapulted the topic of feminism and women in the workplace. Though “Together,” men are directly involved through examples and sharing stories about how they support women and present an overall positive environment. In LIT’s words, posted on their official website: “Children with involved fathers are happier, healthier, and more successful. Couples that share responsibilities have stronger marriages. Diverse teams and companies produce better results. Men, show the world you’re in for equality. Women, celebrate men leaning in.”

This is an admirable direction in confronting inequality because it feels inclusive that women’s rights aren’t anti-men, it’s about being treated fairly. Usually, in the past, it was a woman’s initiative to get the conversation going. LIT is hoping to change that and with the help of influential men like James and Wade, they’re making a big splash.

Earlier this year and after the Rice debacle, the NFL redeemed itself in airing a powerful commercial during this year’s Super Bowl that consoled women in calling for help or guidance if experiencing domestic abuse. And NFL player Russell Wilson is a part of anti-violence campaign called Pass the Peace.

Lean In Together is introducing the simplified idea that in encouraging women to be great from the start makes for happier lives and happier homes.
