Prosecutors charge handcuffed suspect whose arrest was caught on video

Wayne County prosecutors have charged a man in connection with a carjacking and robbery of a woman at gunpoint with her grandchildren in the car.

A video showing the arrest of the defendant, Andrew Jackson, later surfaced on social media. Some were outraged at the officers’ actions during the arrest, saying they were assaulting Jackson even though he was already handcuffed and lying on the ground.

The woman who witnessed and filmed the incident asked FOX 2 not to identify her, but said what police did was wrong and that’s why she started recording with her phone.

Prosecutors say earlier that day Jackson approached a 55-year-old woman as she was brushing snow off her car on Evergreen Road between 6 and 7 Mile roads, and then robbed her and pointed the gun at her grandchildren. Prosecutors say he threatened to shoot the children if they did not get out of the car.

A police investigation by the A.C.T.I.O.N. Auto Theft Task Force lead to the arrest of Jackson later that day at a different location, where the video was said to have been recorded.

An investigation into the officers’ actions during Jackson’s arrest has been submitted to the Michigan State Police and it is ongoing.

Jackson has been charged with carjacking; armed robbery; assault with intent to rob while armed; felonious assault; carrying a concealed weapon; felon in possession of a firearm; unlawful driving away of an automobile; resisting and obstructing; and felony firearm.

Southgate homeowner shoots, kills home invasion suspect

A suspected home invader was fatally shot Thursday morning in Southgate by the homeowner.

The homeowner and his wife were awoken around 4:30 a.m. He grabbed his legal firearm and fired at the intruder, who was also armed, according to Southgate Police Department’s director, Thomas Coombs.

Charges are pending against the homeowner.

“You can, obviously, defend your home if someone comes into your home. The intruder was armed, so, yes, you can defend yourself,” says Coombs.

Police are not releasing identities at this time, but the homeowners are said to be a man and a woman in their 60s.

The shooting happened at a home in the 15000 block of Flanders Street, which is near the intersection of Allen and Eureka roads.

“This is a very, very quiet neighborhood through here. Nothing goes on. This is very surprising,” says Rick Mercer, whose daughter lives nearby.

Sportsmanship questioned after Cass Tech’s 80-0 girls basketball win

An 80-0 girls basketball win by Detroit Cass Tech over Detroit Osborn raised eyebrows and questions.

The one-sided varsity blowout win Wednesday night called into question sportsmanship.

Cass Tech Coach Marissa Thrower disagrees.

“We didn’t press after the first quarter, we pulled the press off,” she said. “As a coach I can’t tell my girls not to go hard. I told them to still go hard, let’s focus on fundamentals and execution. That was the main thing.”

“You never want to have an 80-point lead in a game,” said point guard Taylor Parker. “You want it to be a good game with competition. We did the best we could.

“(The starters) really didn’t play much of the game. We played the first quarter and maybe like two minutes in the fourth quarter and then the coach took us out.”

Some coaches have been disciplined after lop-sided scores. Could Thrower have done something different?

“After the game, it was tough,” Thrower said. “As a former student-athlete myself. You want to see the game be competitive. I was caught between a rock and a hard place.”

K’Lynn Willis, a guard said it was not the team’s intention to embarrass Osborn.

“I was completely shocked, I didn’t expect that to happen,” Willis said. “We did not go into the game wanting that to happen. We had never seen Osborn play before. We didn’t (expect) the outcome of that game at all.”

Thrower said she has not received any negative reaction from the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
