Continuing the Doernbecher Freestyle X rollout, today we look at a few shoes designed by and for women and girls, starting with Kira Smith’s Nike Dunk Sky Hi Doernbecher. (Stay tuned for the Roshe Run designed by Kira’s twin sister Kate.)
Kira, 17, who overcame obsessive-compulsive disorder with the help of the Doernbecher Child Psychiatry team, is a gifted dancer with an eye toward a career as a designer. For her Dunk Sky Hi, she used a design heavily informed by her affinity for Alice in Wonderland, including lace embossing, a corset detail running up the heel and ribbon shoelaces. Kira personally drew the graphics that adorn the shoe’s outsole, which also includes the Cheshire Cat’s famous quote: “We’re all mad here.”
Kira’s Dunk Sky Hi Doernbecher releases November 9 along with the rest of the Doernbecher Freestyle X collection, including a tanktop she also designed. As always, proceeds from sales of the Doernbecher Freestyle collection will benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
