Almost everyone is talking about the business deal Jay Z made with Samsung for his upcoming album Magna Carta Holy Grail. For those of you who haven’t been eating from the force fed portion of Music Business served on a plate this week, I’ll quickly fill you in.

Samsung bought 1 million copies of the album, at $5.00 a piece, with the agreement that it would be allowed to preview it to its Galaxy customers a few days before the release date. Jay Z then announced this deal during the NBA Finals via a 3 minute commercial where Jay Z’s “winning on top of winning” mentality is in full display. Soon after the commercial, a picture of Jay Z accompanied by Rick Rubin, Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz, and Timbaland also known as some of the most famous Producers in the Rap game started circulating around on what Jay refers to as The Wild, Wild, West, or what we usually call The Internet.

The attempt to distract fans away from the content of the album was highly successful. And while some are going as far as praising Jay Z calling him one of the most intelligent men in “The Business” and making him sound like he discovered the cure for the cancer that plagues Hip Hop, others simply see it as a cleverly disguised marketing scheme.

Meanwhile Hip Hop fans are waiting to hear what always makes or breaks a music album – The content.

The title (Magna Carta Holy Grail). Magna Carta or The Great Charter was a series of written promises signed by King John. The agreement was signed in attempts to stop The King from abusing his power with the people of England suffering.
