The new Oz film, Oz the Great and Powerful, topped the weekend box office, beating out Colin Farrell’sDead Man Down.

The new Oz pulled in $80.3 million over the weekend. It serves as the prequel to the classic L. Frank Baum tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, chronicling the origin of the wizard, played by James Franco. The three witches he encounters are played by Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz.

Last weekend’s top filmJack the Giant Slayer, fell to #2 with $10 million; the comedy Identity Thieftook the #3 spot; and The Rock’s Snitch closed out the top 5 with $5.1 million.

The weekend’s other wide release, the crime drama Dead Man Down, debuted at #4 with $5.3 million. It stars Colin Farrell in New York City, where a crime lord’s right-hand man is seduced by one of his boss’s victims, a woman seeking retribution.

That’s a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of Steven Carell comedy,The Incredible Burt Wonderstone; and Halle Berry’s thriller, The Call.
