5 Great War Films For Veterans Day
Today is Veterans Day, the day we honor the end of WWI and all those who fought for freedom. Since many of us have no school or work, here are a few war films that will feel right as you lay on the couch all day.
1. Miracle St. Anna
This epic film is about the Buffalo Soldiers 92nd Infantry Division serving during WWII in Italy. With a battle scene on par with Saving Private Ryan, this film is a must-see. Starring Derek Luke, this mystery drama spans over WWII to 1983. Directed by Spike Lee.
2. Men of Honor
Inspired by the true story of Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear, the first African-American Master Diver in the United States Navy. If you haven’t seen this film, you need to see it. If you have seen this film already, see it again. If you saw it twice. Buy the DVD.
3. The Tuskegee Airmen
This made-for-TV film is about the first African American combat pilots in the United States Army Air Force that fought in World War II. There are few films out there that get into our history as great American patriots. Starring Laurence Fishburne, Allen Payne, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
4. Glory
This 1989 film is based on the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, told from the point of view of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, its commanding officer during the American Civil War. The 54th regiment was one of the first units of the United States Army to be made up entirely of African American men. Starring Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.
5. The Hurt Locker
This film set in modern times during the war in the Middle East. Anthony Mackie (Eagle Eye, Notorious) plays Sgt. J.T. Sanborn, a member of an elite team of bomb-squad technicians. This film is a gritty depiction of life as a soldier. It is a great story about a group of men waiting out their service as every day may cost them their lives. It won the Oscar for Best Film the same year Avatarwas nominated.
