Jill Scott Celebrates Birthday, Releases Brand New Music

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JILL SCOTT

Seems like she’s been gone from us for so long, doesn’t it? When we last heard from Jill Scott she was fresh into motherhood and successfully raising her first child – a baby boy, whom we are absolutely convinced he’s just as sweet and adorable as his mother is. Before that, shocking rumors hit the gossip blogs and the airwaves with sparse details of her breakup with then fiance-turned-baby daddy (and accomplished musician) “Lil Jon” Roberts, her drummer. Then just last summer, she canceled a round of highly anticipated tour dates due to a sudden family illness many of us still have questions about, but through it all, Jill Scott promised not to keep us waiting for new music.

With a few features here and there, her voice has remained one that’s familiar, soulful and not too far out of the reach of die-hard Jilly from Philly fans who’ve been there since day one. So what better way to return to the music scene after six gold and multi-platinum full length albums (wow, can you believe how much time has flown by us?) under her belt and a catalog of stellar award-worthy TV/film acting roles? We think the best way is to blaze back on the scene and steal the spotlight with an unexpected collaboration is the best way – but wait, it gets even better when it’s Jill’s 39th birthday added to the mix!

That’s right, Jill Scott has returned. Finally, and this time she asked her homegirl (no pun intended) Eve to help her bring the Philly soul/Hip Hop hybrid to fruition with a funky spin on their joint record “Shame.” Listen below and tell us what you think of the three-and-a-half minute jam as both Jill and Eve spring back into action. Exclusive Interview with Marsha Ambrosius

We promised to bring you nothing but the exclusives in 2011 and this week, we’re keeping it moving with our very special and ultra exciting interview with R&B/soul singer and songwriter Marsha Ambrosius.

Your girl Keta Kiwi recently caught up with the burgeoning star who’s preparing for the long awaited release of her solo debut Late Nights & Early Mornings, expected to hit stores first quarter 2011. Already proven as a talented, sought after songwriter and revered platinum-selling artist, Marsha Ambrosius is meeting and welcoming the next challenge in her already impressive musical career by reinventing herself as a solo artist with her J Records debut.

As you might recall, fans already have received their first taste of the Liverpool, England native’s talent as one-half of the sultry neo-soul duo Floetry. Their 2000 debut Floetic produced signature singles like “Say Yes” and “Getting Late” as well as four Grammy nods. Following the 2005 release of their second studio album, Flo’Ology, the ladies veered creatively and personally. While the split was difficult, Marsha continued to build a name for herself as a songwriter and producer, creating “Butterflies” for the late Michael Jackson and other hits for artists such as Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx and Nas. She’s been nominated for a total of six Grammys and has been honored by BMI as their Songwriter of the Year.

But now, it’s her own turn in the spotlight. The “Princess Boy” Controversy Continues

There has been much speculation and commentary on the recent media attention given to a family who’s five-year-old male child has been permitted and encouraged to actively dress as if he’s a girl.

Pink dresses, princess costumes worn as daily outfits, bedazzled garments fit for a little girl and more have caught the attention and the ridicule we all know is bound to come from various cultures, citizens and parents.

This week, our sister station’s very own Lincoln Ware was scheduled to speak with the child’s mother, Cheryl Kilodavis of Seattle, who decided to allow her son to wear dresses and even wrote a book about it called “Princess Boy.”

This morning, however, callers were given the chance to speak out on The Russ Parr Morning Show after Cheryl Kilodavis was interviewed by the show’s co-hosts. Here’s what everyone had to say.

Cheryl and her son were also on the “The Today Show” Monday morning to talk about the book and the whole world has once again drawn conclusions concerning the story and its many connotations. Watch the video clips provided below for yourself to get the full scoop.

Cheryl Kilodavis’ mission is “to accept and celebrate the unique person within us all,” but is that really what she’s doing? Mothers, where do you stand? Fathers, how do you feel?

So today we pose the question would you allow your son (or daughter) to dress like the opposite sex – why or why not? What happens when you can’t protect your child from the opinions of the general public?

Does this type of behavior and desire to dress feminine/masculine bring into play sexuality, homophobia, gender confusion, stereotypes and stigmas for your child? What issues of acceptance and understanding of self-expression arise when dealing with children in this case?
